In a significant move to uphold seafarer rights, the Australian Maritime Safety Authority (AMSA) has prohibited the Liberian-registered bulk carrier Ocean Bright from entering Australian ports until September 4, 2026. This is the first such ban issued by the authority in 15 months, signaling a firm stance on maritime labor standards.
The action was initiated after reports surfaced that eight crewmembers aboard the 75,621 dwt vessel had not been paid for two months. An inspection in Newcastle, Australia, confirmed that the crew was owed US$46,334 in unpaid wages. Furthermore, the vessel was found to have 18 separate deficiencies, four of which were severe enough to warrant immediate detention.
Greg Witherall, AMSA’s Acting Executive Director of Operations, emphasized that this enforcement reinforces the agency’s commitment to the Maritime Labour Convention. By holding ship owners and operators accountable, AMSA continues to be a global leader in protecting seafarer welfare and ensuring that safety standards are not compromised by financial negligence.
