Purchasing a second-hand workboat is a significant investment, and proper pre-purchase surveys are your most important risk management tool. This guide breaks down the survey types available and when each is appropriate.

Pre-Purchase Condition Survey

The most common survey for second-hand transactions. A qualified marine surveyor inspects the hull, machinery, safety equipment, and navigation systems. Expect to budget 0.5–1.0% of the vessel's value for a thorough condition survey.

Class Survey Records

Always request the vessel's full classification society records. These show the history of annual, intermediate, and special surveys. A vessel with continuous class from a recognised IACS member society provides significantly more buyer confidence.

Underwater Hull Inspection

If the vessel cannot be drydocked before sale, an underwater hull inspection by qualified divers with video recording is essential. Look for hull plate wastage, propeller condition, and seachest integrity.

Valuation Survey

Separate from condition assessment, a valuation survey provides an independent market value opinion. This is often required by lenders if the purchase involves financing.

WBT's Survey Coordination Service

Our SGD 450 Survey Coordination Pack connects buyers with vetted surveyors in key APAC ports, manages scheduling, and ensures survey scopes meet the standards our transaction team requires for managed deals.
